Learning-Teaching-at-training-room

While training is usually conducted at training room, classroom environment, we have slowly seen popular platforms to conduct online training start to spring up over the years and have become extremely popular. Do you always have to learn at a classroom or training room and be physically present? Not necessarily so.

There are definitely pros to conducted courses online, and one of the main pros is that you are not restricted by geographical location and your course is able to reach a worldwide audience, unlike a training session whereby you need to conduct it at a particular venue.

Also, once your course is recorded and put up for sales via platforms like Coursera, Udemy, the student is able to view, play and replay the lessons at his own pace and learning speed. This is one of the greatest advantage that technology has brought to the learning space.  Basically, learning and knowledge has no boundaries in today’s age.

In this video, we would like to share an interesting video by one of the best Udemy instructors, John explaining how to make a successful video course using the Udemy platform. In addition to that, he also shares tips on marketing and promoting the video to potential audience and ultimately getting people to buy your program. Being an expert in this industry, his video has shared many pitfalls to avoid and tips to create and make your online course successful.

Below are his first few tips and do watch the entire video to learn how to create a powerful video course and demonstrate yourself as an expert in your field when doing so.

Tip One – Get your title right

When your title is right, it makes it easier for people to find your course and attract the right audience. If you do reply to queries, you do not wish to reply at whims to queries that are not actually looking for your product.

Hence, it is important that you know who you are creating your course for and always bear that in mind throughout your course creation process.

Tip Two – Answer your potential clients : What’s in it for me?

Making sure your participants understand what’s in it for me when they manage to search for your course and they are crystal clear when they do sign up. This is the benefit that you need to show your potential clients and you want to do it right, to minimize the refund policy from being utilized, if any is in place.

Tip Three – Course Description

How do you sell your course? The trick is that you do it via the course description. You may ask how is the course description going to sell my course? Below are some tips:

  •  Show some social proof, reviews, testimonials
  • Prepare, research and address some objections that you think your participants might have and show them why and how it will work for them
  • Give 30 days guarantee so that this will help to allay your potential clients’ fears
  • Write short paragraphs with distinct headings, sub headings
  • Try to avoid, in fact don’t use big long complex sentences. Write simply and clearly.

Optimize Lectures

In order to capture your audience attention and make sure they learn effectively, keep your per video or lecture between 3-5 minutes. This is the benefit of learning online unlike traditional classroom training whereby it must take place at large blocks of time.

There must be a clear objective for each lecture. Some good structure are introducing the topic to the participant / overview, then followed by teaching the materials and ending off the lesson with a summary. This has been said to have one of the methods that is able to achieve high knowledge retention rate.

Tips to decorate a training room for morale

Training is a very tiresome program especially if the procedure involved is tough and gruesome. The specialist and the involved trainers must be very creative in integrating room beauty to ensure that they know what are the nice to –haves. Influencing the appearance of the training room is a vital part of successful and systematic approach to training. Any form of education is largely dependent on the learning environment and because of that.Training-room-tips-morale

The learners can quickly put the training practices in action if the training place is captivating and boosting enthusiasm. Therefore, the paper expounds on the measures to be taken to improve training room beautification and boost training morale.
When designing training room, it is vital to ensure that there is no existence of internal window that can cause distraction. Statistics has proven that trainers perform well when peers peep in or walk by (Bowman, 2009). Do not forget that you need external windows otherwise the entire place will be horrid.

Sometimes trainers waste a lot of their time especially during the breakout areas. It is recommended that tea and coffee are on tap system to avoid unnecessary waste of time.

This place should also be attractive since a change of scenery is as excellent as the rest itself. Integrate music beautiful system if you are dealing with body building and gym training. Music is the soul for the soul and when done during training session it can be of great help to stimulate energy.

Do not start training if there are no explicit instructions in the room directing the trainees the action to take in case of emergencies. Let them know the fire procedures, equipment in the room and the crew, to call in case the instructions you provided doesn’t work. Consider inspecting the type of walls the room is designed. Style the room such that the materials covering the walls can give the opportunity to put blu-tac on. This is an added beauty that cannot be ignored by an experienced trainer.

Have you ever trained or rented a training room where you hardly get or hear the lecture words? It is hectic. Therefore, provide proper soundproofing to ensure your students get your voice as clear as possible (Fundamentals of good taste in interior design, 1956). This will ensure that in case of a distracting noise from the neighbour or next room cannot penetrate. Stuff the room entirely with flexible furniture that can be folded away to create enough space when needed.

Sticking beautiful pictures on the walls that relate to the event taking place is worth noting down. It is horrible to enter a training room and what you encounter is pictures of maybe nursing sick people or advertisements of food related things.

It may seem very irrelevant, but the booking system of your room should be very clear to the trainees. The complicated procedure involving strict pros pisses off the potential trainers booking your room next time.

In conclusion, in as much as beautifying the place is significant, the trainer should have indisputable knowledge on the training to help him or her relax and deliver the best. Some coaches forget to give room for feedback from his or training program. It is sometimes nerve wrecking if the response is negative but remember critics should be the ladder to help you rocket higher.

Interesting tip from a teacher’s manual

Wanted to share this interesting and hilarious tip I read from a teacher’s manual. Here goes:

“When erasing a board, use vertical strokes: your strokes will show the least amount of movement. Horizontal strokes may make hips shake, which students may find humorous and thus distracting”

Hope you like the tip. I thought it might be really useful for trainers and teachers who did not realise it.

A unique request for our training room (Part two)

Jay was punctual and was happy with the set up of the interview room and the facilities. She said that she was a regional  representative and looking to hire someone in Singapore as a coordinator between Singapore and the other offices. She was expecting about 20 candidates who applied for the role.

I asked her how would she know who is a suitable candidate and she shared some interview tips with me as follows:

Dressing
The candidate who turn up must have made effort in dressing up, not in a exaggerated manner but at least the bare minimum
of dressing properly and professionally and have made some effort.

Arriving on time
The candidate must not be late and those who turn up at least 20 minutes before will be good. Candidates who are late will
be be naturally be discounted from the role substantially.

Willingness
As an interviewer, the job is to find out the most willing candidate to do the role. many people have the incorrect
concept of hiring the best candidate among the rest, but a proper and better method is to find the best fit for the
role. Sometimes, hiring the most talented or experienced candidate may not be the best fit because he or she is not
willing.

Has the candidate prepared adequately for the interview or highlighted his achievements
The candidate should be concise and adequately illustrate his past achievements and be able to share how he can fit the role and bring value to the company.

Questions
The candidate should have done some research and able to ask some insightful questions about the role, company, for example, the values, mission etc. This shows his interest and has taken the time and effort to research about the role and company.

Above all, it is after all a gut feel and experience as to which is the right candidate for the role.

A Unique request for our training rooms

Recently, we have a client (let’s name her as Jay (not her real name so as to keep confidential) who is stationed in Bangkok. She found out about our training room from our website and called us for inquiry. Hence, hearing her familiar friendly accent and subsequently understanding where she is from,. I thought that she may not be familiar with Singapore and as
I am also curious with the type of event she is intending to hold at our rooms. We took much time explaining to her about:

  1. Our venue location which was very convenient, especially for a foreigner who is not familiar with Singapore
  2. Our rates which are reasonably priced
  3. The facilities that come along with the rental
  4. The kind of set up for her event
  5. Posted her some nice photos of a current event we had for a client

Interestingly, Jay is not at all interested with our facilities and interested to know 1) whether the location is convenient enough for her clients. This piqued my curiosity as most of my first time clients who rent our seminar room or training rooms would want to know what facilities comes along with the rental. This is the really the first rare encounter I had.

The only second question she has for me is whether we can clear the entire room for her i.e. clear all the tables and only leave one table and two chairs in the room. As this was going to be a quite tedious process, I had to confirm her required arrangement.

I asked her whether if she wanted a classroom seating arrangement, she said no. She then explained to me what she was going to hold a mass interview at our training room. She was representing her head office in Bangkok, and intends to interview a few candidates for a job position.

IMG_5446A MASS INTERVIEW
This was the first time we received such a unique request, and not wanting to disappoint her, we said yes to her event.  Of course, payment came promptly.

On the day of the rental, we prepared early by clearing the tables, and put in place the arrangement what our client requested. We also carefully vacuumed the carpet, cleared the bins, gave a few spurts of freshener and we wanted to make sure Jay will be comfortable upon arriving.

Not sure why, but this is not the first time a foreign client has rented our seminar or classrooms. However, there is this responsibility to make sure that we are hospitable towards our foreign clients whenever they book from us. As part of our service, we even gave her a call to make sure that she knows her way to our place. To be continued…

What are the training methods commonly used today? (Part Two)

Training via Audio and visuals
This method includes learning through videos, television, documentary. This method opens employees or students to practical and real life case studies in a time and money saving method. This method allows new employees, students to learn through other people mistakes. The weakness of such a method is that it usually is adopted for a general audience and not so much free play in the tailoring of program. In addition, interaction during such a method of training may be lesser than most of the methods that we have discussed.

Online or computer based learning
Increasingly, this method has been very popular that even universities like Stanford has many workshops and lectures being shared online inviting people to join. This is out of a classroom setting and usually can be done at home. One of the more popular learning portals today is Udemy which has gained worldwide recognition for learning. For in house computer based training programs, they are usually customized to present and share materials in such a way that it allows employees or students to learn at their own time. The advantage of such a learning method is thus the ability to allow employees to learn and study at their own pace. It can be before work, after work and during the employees’ resting hours.

As such a method of training requires a lot of discipline on the part of the student or employee, it is good that the person who is instituting the online or computer based learning, give timeline and clear goal and objectives to the student and employee.

Apprenticeship
An experienced employee or a more senior person will guide and lead the apprentice on the job for a certain time period. Skills will be imparted during this form of training so that the apprentice will eventually know how to perform the job competently. This form of training is good for imparting skills that are more hands on.

Team Building
Team building learning should be amongst all, the most fun, engaging and interactive. This is usually carried out by a third party, which is a team building company. It is usually used to help the team understand each other better, how to meet objectives that are given and importantly to act as one. During such a learning exercise, there is no rank to speak of as everyone is to be equal. A good team building facilitator will usually tell the cohort the objective before and after the program and point out what is done well, done not so well and what can be improved. If time permits, a video to capture all the moments with good music will usually move many to tears and forge a bond amongst the team.

What are the training methods commonly used today?

As time goes by and the advancement of technology, many new methods constantly developed for training in the classroom or workplace, however some training methods have been proven to be more effective than others. Below we will discuss the several training methods as a good learning program will usually mix and match various methods to come out with one effective training plan suited for the organisation or the employees.

Lectures
I recalled since primary school or university lectures in training room, this has been the most commonly method used to impart knowledge as it is able to reach a large audience at one time. This is often said to be one of the most cost efficient method as it does not require one-to-one learning, and is a one-sided affair. However, this has its cons as it does not facilitate interactive learning and can be boring if the lecturer style of presentation is not engaging or interesting enough.

Role Play
This method of learning is often fun and interactive as the students will take on a role that is usually within the challenge presented by the lecturer. Much laughter can be heard during such form of learning. However, one drawback is that it is time consuming, needs classroom management from the teacher and hence it must be carefully thought through by the lecturer the points he want the students to master or equip and is it worth the time.

Case Studies Analysis
In the real world, this is often a good method of practical learning. The students will apply preferably real life case studies, for example, how to increase beverage sales of a company, and the students will need to study, analyse, propose and test out certain ideas to boost sales. This method can often spur the students to think independently, to think of solutions, rather than always relying on the teacher or lecturer. Usually, after the case study, the lecturer will also open up to the floor for discussion. In summary, this method is really good as it gives a practical and experirentail learning opportunites to the students.

Orientations
This applies to new employees in an organisation when they first come onboard. The training can come in several forms, from a lecture, seminars,  one-to-one meeting with the orientation in charge or the department supervisor, or a presentation by several people in the organisation to introduce what their respective departments do. The information during orientation should cover what the company does, its organisational structure, mission and values etc.

Job Rotation
It is quite common for Singapore employees to wear double hats nowadays due to the tight labour market. During job rotation, the employees would go through or take on another distinctive role and gain experience of the job. This can be a good method if sometimes the employees is bored or stagnant at his present role.

Tips for Classroom Management

A new teacher recently used our training room to teach her class, it is common one might find classroom management challenging. Below are 3 tips to overcome and be better at classroom management.

Adopt a normal voice
Most newbie teachers raise their voices when they speak, be it in a classroom or seminar room style setting, however this lesson will be learnt hard when one loses the voice one day. The important tip here is not to raise your voice to get attention as it harms your vocal cords. Also, this is not effective as your voice is usually drowned within the classroom and the students’ voices.

When the class is quiet then you speak
This golden tip works wonders. When you suddenly quiet down, you will many times realise that the class will suddenly be quiet too. This ‘mirroring effect’ works much better than you trying to out raise the voices of the entire class. Your good students will also ask the rest to be quiet when they realise you are no longer talking. Similarly, you should adopt this tip when for example an aeroplane flies past the classroom.

Set certain hand signals with the students
Educate and share your common hand signals with your students. This can vary from a certain hand signal asking them to quieten down, queue up. One popular attention seeking hand signal to try using is you can first raise your hand, then expect everyone in the class to raise their hands. You will wait till the last man’s hand is raised, before you lower your hand and start to speak. The rest of the class will also follow suit. Try it, you will be amazed how effective this hand signal will work.

Some of other popular hand signals are clapping your hands a numbers of times, and you will expect a similar response from your students. Another is knocking on the white board a number of times and this should quieten down your students.

In summary, set some house rules and hand signals so that you do not over strain your voice.
